Nothing particularly new but anyone not familiar with Loch Striven might find the section about Highball on tonight's

Sorry to disagree but the VC10s of 10 Sqn were reguarly used for long distance Royal Flights. If travelling to Canada then RCAF aircraft were used, and to Australia then it was RAAF aircraft. Within New Zealand RNZAF aircraft were used, they didnt have long distance airliners.

The aircraft overran on landing at Islay, and its nose undercarriage failed and broke away on the rough ground, just beyond the end of the runway. It is reported that the aircraft touched down on its nose wheel some 1,500 feet down the runway, travelling 32 knots too fast with a 12 knots tailwind component.
It is understood that the wheel brakes were then applied 'before the full activation of the anti-skid protection systems' causing both inboard main wheels to lock and the subsequent failure of their tyres. There were no reported injuries. It is understood that the pilot handling the aircraft at the time of the accident was HRH The Prince of Wales who was attending a series of engagements in the Hebridean Islands.
The flight had come from Aberdeen. Runway 13/31 at Islay is 1,545 metres long with a landing distance available of 1,245 metres. The runway has a tarmac surface. It is reported that the Board of Inquiry found the captain 'negligent' in that '(he failed) to intervene when the aircraft performance and limitations were exceeded in the final stages of the flight'.
The navigator was also apparently found 'negligent' for 'failing to advise the captain of the tailwind component and to draw his attention to the inaccurate approach parameters.'

In our second episode of Dig WW2, Dan Snow heads out to sea to hear the story of the Empire Heritage, a cargo ship filled with Sherman Tanks sunk off Malin Head during the Battle of the Atlantic in 1944. Staying on the water, he visits an RAF Flying Boat Base on Lough Erne, where he gets to fly in an original WW2 Catalina, an aircraft built for hunting U-boats. Dan also gets to hear some of the stories which bring a personal aspect to his discoveries, visiting a group of experts intent on discovering the unknown identities of bodies of Second World War soldiers and finally bringing closure to their families all these years later.

just watched it on catch up.... BBC's "Inside Out - Yorkshire and Lincolnshire" first shown on Monday 21st October has some footage regarding the closure of RAF Linton on Ouse and the retirement of the Tucano. Its not mentioned in the credits, and its towards the end, but worth a watch
