I'm never sure which is best in snow, third rail or overhead. I have to say that after travelling on Southeastern for 38 years and Thameslink for 6 the overhead seems to be more problematic. I do remember the snow plough at Slade Green was an old steam train tender back in the late 80's. In the mid 80's the snow plough got stuck in the snow. It was a good foot deep and very sticky, probably worse in the cuttings, so I wasn't surprised. I went home as the snow on the tracks at my local station was at the same height as the platform snow!
Overall my experience on the old slam doors was more reliable in snow than today, probably for the reasons already stated. These days I'd rather work from home as the walk down hill all the way to the station is dangerous, especially after the kids have smoothed the pavements and roads to a nice sheen with their tobogans (not a tea tray in sight!)

My experience is almost the opposite of yours. I used to live in Kent, and commuted on the Southeastern railway to my job as a driver on Thameslink for nearly 10 years.
For the last 2 snowy seasons I had a hellish journey getting to work because SE & NR couldn't/wouldn't keep their 3rd rail clear. However once I was at work I drove round all day on the MML overheads without any problems.
Both systems have their strengths and weeknesses, but I suspect that if the 3rd rail system were cleared properly (like it used to be with "Ghost Trains" run throughout the night & regular deicers) it would be more dependable than overheads. So I agree with you in theory - if they spent the money that's how it probably would be. That's my humble opinion as someone who drives both systems for a living.

The senior community may remember the winter of 47 when the steam propelled snow ploughs on the Stainmoor railway route were clearing snow drifts up to six feet deep and recorded by BR and released as a video years later.
The even senior community may recall the pictures of the old Somerset central railway engines working in three feet of water during flooding on the levels with their ash pan doors closed to reduce the risk of a fire bed blow back.
We could still get around in 63 through nearly a foot of snow using our trusty bezza bantam providing you did not let the snow set in their deep recessed mud guards.
I read an article yesterday by Frank Westworth that new motor cycles with their micro processor controlled traction control devices don't respond as well in deep snow.
