Exactly the same thing happened at the 4x4 school place I worked at a few years ago.
One of the initial lessons was the instructor taking the punters out onto the skid pan (on Desborough airfield) to get them comfortable with a vehicle not necessarily moving in the same direction which it was pointing.
We always used proper Land Rovers, and one morning we were looking over from the office at the skid pan to see the LR enter, turn, and promptly flip over onto its side.
Turns out this particular LR, a fortnight out of the factory and brand new to the fleet that day, was fitted with ABS, traction control and all the other latest gizmos and, despite them being switched off, had a hissy fit on being put into a deliberate 4-wheel skid, decided it knew better than the driver and activated everything up it could find resulting it keeling over.
Traction Control can certainly make a difference. I was once going down into Argyll in the firm's Freelander van, I came to a pass that still had a few inches of fresh snow on it. A lorry had got stuck and there were several cars also unable to get up the hill. There was a normal looking (i.e. not 4WD) estate car in front of me, I am sure he must have had TC because he just kept going and passed them all, as I did without any problems at all.
Can we please get this thread back on track with news and comment only on airfields closed due to snow ? Should you wish to drift , snow drift , the topic onto the abilities or otherwise of various 4x4 vehicles and even trains in snow , since Page 4 - Post#40 , then please take them to another thread !
