There must be a market for accurate scale model bombs of all types. Is there not a small manufacturer already doing these?

I always had a huge spares box, maybe someone has the required Grand Slam or Tallboy sulking in their spares box.

Yes Flightpath do numerous types of WW2 trolleys with different bomb loads, Pavia do various UK bombs and Belcher Bits do Cookies and Blockbusters plus incendirary containers but no one seems to do a Grandslam or Tallboy as stand alone items. I looked at a 1/72 Hagasawa kit of a Lanc nearly £40 so That is one route I cannot follow. regards TED

Should be enough info there to help scratch-build one. IIRC, the Frog Lanc came with a Tallboy, but I never got around to buying one before they went bust.
If you don't know, Hyperscales modelling forum does a brilliant scale calculator that will convert those mms to 1/72 or whatever scale you choose.
Fancy a 1/72 Bardney? The main runway was 2000 yards by 50, now that equates to 83.33 feet by 2.08 feet. Simple! All I need is a little space...

I figured that you are capable of 'scratch' building Ted, so making a model of the required bomb should not be beyond you. Ossi has beaten me to it with a dimensioned sketch.

Nice Type H; is it from a kit? In my early RAF career I had to service 4000 pound Bomb Hoists then relegated to Victor and Valiant engine hoisting. They had a bolt-on DC electric drive motor and the combination was stupidly heavy and awkward.

Hi Peter yes I will add it to the list of to be done ! Am I right in saying a smaller version of the winch was used with the Aden gun pack ?

I spent 3 fantastic years in Armament GSE situated just outside the gates of the eastern explosives area at Akrotiri 70 to 73 Although both trades worked on whatever needed doing us Gen Fitts were not allowed to touch the armament hoists. I remember the SABTs and Ford powered power packs for the Vulcans, the Firestreak & Redtop stuff for the Lightenings.

There was also some wonderful old ALVIS manufactured items for the Canberra.
Days out in the Marine Craft unit boats or RASC landing craft dumping black listed items at sea using GPMG and SLR to sink the floater happy days

I remember similar hoists, but hand wound, used to raise/lower Conways into a VC10. A loong way up. Part of an engine change kit left behind at Kai Tak in case one went u/s en route.

Not really; they were similar yet quite different. It was a Type C Hoist with a maximum of 1200 pounds capacity but the clutch was set much lower. Once again, a former Bomb Hoist adapted to lifting other things.

Ted

I'm just had rumage throug my Lancaster stash and if you would like the 'Tallboy' bomb from my Frog kit then you are welcome to it.
I'd rather see it go to a worthy project than leave it 'unattended' in the box as i am highly unlikely to build the 'tallboy' Lancaster version.

Send me a PM with your details
