Tallboy does look the part sat on the trolley, was it secured 'on' the trolley ?
i have little doubt it couldn't have fallen off but you just never know ???
Ian
At the AGM, i met Alan, he will be joining us soon in the world of computer technology.
He did ask if i could produce an AEC bowser for his Lancaster and Halifax, well heres one i made earlier from the Airfix kit with the mods. from the QL ...
I have a kit earmarked for that conversion I saw a piccy with one with this conversion and the truck had blackout masks on the headlights so I reckon they entered service mid to late 1944 as the blackout began being lifted shortly after D Day ??
re Tallboy in all the piccies I have seen it appears not to have any restraint in fact few bombs ever seem to be restrained
Bombs were not restrained during transportation on trolleys despite most trolleys having no suspension. There was a speed limit and a limit on the number of trolleys in the 'train' (to prevent 'fishtailing' and trolley bounce) but the limits were often ignored. Consequently, there were cases of bombs bouncing out of the chocks and rubbing on a tyre where the friction generated heat to the point where the bomb detonated. I think there was an incident at Gaydon during WW2.
Having just purchased several back issue of the 'Review' i was interested in reading about the Ipswich Municipal hangar.
Grimsby too had such a Boulton Paul type 'B' built in 1937 if i remember correctly, and so i obtain the drawings and tender for this from the Town Hall archives.
For those not aware, i am in the process of building a diorama and have this particular hangar in the 'construction stage'
Thought i would post a photo or two of it ...
The addition of the hangar doors and Classsroom/workshop at the rear will be fabricated from plasti-card.
Second photo shows the pre-war Bungalow to the left of the hangar. This was used by the Flying club and later by the Station Commander as his residence.
