Welcome Oldie68.

I am familiar with the area and used to enjoy walking over Langdon Battery until they tarmaced over it! Still I assume it's still there, underneath.

Welcome Twin Pin.

I have flown (as a passenger) in both Twin and Single Pioneers during my RAF service in Malaya 1961 - 1964. The Single was great for STOL in and out of temporary jungle strips.

We had some good fun with the 'bomb-heads' on our Squadron. Very close-knit and helpful crowd.

"Very close-knit and helpful crowd." Armourers don't form crowds: two or more armourers together are known as a "charm" of armourers"!

Three or more armourers together and the magnetic North Pole moves!

Hello everybody, my name is Malcolm 'Ozzie' Osborn and I have been researching AAF Station 131, Nuthampstead and it's operational units ever since 1971. I concentrate mainly on the 398th Bomb Group, my good friend 'ShabbeyAbbey' is the expert on the 55th FG. Back in 1982 I had the honour of designing the 398th memorial which stands close by The Woodman Inn. In 2006 I had much pleasure in helping Shabby get his memorial to the 55th FG erected at Nuthampstead. Also, in 1973, I was one of the founder members of 'Friends of the Eighth' FOTE, when a group of us met at The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds. I enjoy travelling to 8th AAF airfields with Cliff and Stan Bishop whom I regard as two of the best 8th AAF researchers in the world right now. I call our little team of travellers 'Last of the Summer Wine' because of our advancing ages - I am 'Compo' the one they throw out of the car to climb down ditches and through hedgerows in order to photograph Nissen Huts and drain covers!! For me, the 8th AAF and it's airfields have been a lifelong passion. I look forward to learning the answers to many things which still puzzle us about airfields - like SCS-51 and lighting on the sides of runways etc. What a great forum to join - thanks Shabby.

A man after my own heart :-D

Welcome aboard Ozzie.

Graham,

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
