I have been interested in all things aviation wise from a very young age ,this was my fathers influence ,he worked for many years at Hawker Siderly at Hatfield and later moved to the gyroscope division at BAC Hatfield .
I myself do not work in the aviation industry ,but I was in the Royal Observer Corps until standown ,even though our main task was pltting nuclear bursts ,we still retained our original aircaft spotting skills
I discovered this sight whilst doing some research into Waterbeach and Bassingbourn ,and have discovered a lot about my local airfields ,if I can be of help I will be ,and please feel free to ask me any questions .
Just a quick update re the Wimpy crash. The memorial proposal is being progressed nicely and we are currently liaising with land/property owners to seek their permissions for siting the memorial and also obtaining quotes from several businesses for provision of materials for the memorial.
poacha38, if you could keep the updates coming here as well as faceache that would be great. Especially for those of us who do not and will not use faceache....
I registered for this forum as my husband has a long held interest in the USAAF Mighty 8th. That said I like the wall art and murals and nose art too. We visited Milton Ernest Hall recently, this superb grade building was once used by Glenn Miller and his band as accommodation whilst in the UK . For those of you interested in wall murals/art , there is a wonderful mural inside the conservatory....... not of a war plane but of a wonderful lion. Pictures of the hall and the lion can be found on this site. ENJOY !! Especially if you find the wall art of interest.... this one is in near perfect condition as it is housed inside a conservatory. We saw it for ourselves .
Hi Guys
signed up last night after spending a rainy Sunday afternoon browsing the forum. Lots of great info on here from some very knowledgable guys. Thank you.
I've always had a background interest in aviation but the last few years have seen me reading more & more about the exciting early years & the wartime stuff.
My grandad was one of the boffins who worked in the RAE but sadly he passed away when i was 9 in 1978 & i have missed out on so much he could have shared..
my main topics of interest are WW2 airfields & i really like the art deco styled control towers. Farnborough had an amazing art deco style tower that was demolished in 2003 & i'm pretty sad to have missed out on that one.
if there is anyone on here who worked at the RAE in the post war years my Grandads name was James L Maitland. he was also a founder member of the RAE camera club (now the Farnborough Camera Club). i'd love to hear any memories of him (good or bad) & hopefully i can chip in if there's anything i find or know that would be of interest
