My father was a Dutch Commando from 2 Dutch Troop No. 10 Commandos At some point he was stationed in St Athans. I believe around 1942. I would like to find out more about when he was there and what he did.

If you look on 192.com there are only a few in the UK with this names. You may wish to drop them a line.

Ian

Yes please, any images that you can post, especially of extant WW2 buildings would be welcome however mundane the subject. It all helps to record an important time in our history.

Thanks for the add. Name is Bob, a Blackcountry lad but now having the good fortune to be living in North Shropshire.

I'm within a short distance of Shawbury, Sleap and Tilstock and with a keen intrest in local history I found this Forum while having a 'Google'. The other thing that got me started was walking my dog over Prees Heath (former RAF Tilstock), taking some pictures of the sorry looking Control Tower and having a 'need' to know more. The Tower is looking a lot better these days after a recent 'makeover'.

I visit Sleap on a regular basis (friend as his PPL) and only this year took my FIRST flight from there at the age of almost 50!:o. All this just adds to my intrest. I'm also a active Radio Amateur.

Thanks once again.

Welcome Bob from another Staffordshire lad.
Some 50 years ago used to regularly go around the Shropshire airfields - that was when they were mostly still in the state the RAF or RN had abandoned them. Peplow, Hinstock, High Ercall, Tilstock were particularly evocative.
Flew from Tern Hill and Shawbury as a cadet.
You'll find the AIX forums a fascinating place to explore.

I must add that I know very little about the various Airfields listed but I'm happy to read and learn. Might be an up-hill struggle mind:wink:

Welcome to AiX Rockhampster,

Once the airfield bug bites you will not get rid of it. It can teach an old dog new tricks. Just read the appropriate thread on the forum for the airfields in your location and go take a look as you have with Tilstock. Any queries be sure to ask here.

Hi everyone,

I'd be really grateful for your help:

I'm looking for a disused hangar in an airfield, preferably in North West England (I'm based near Oldham), to use as a workshop. Ideally, I'd find a lovely farmer who happens to have an old airfield on his land, with a couple of hangars still standing. This lovely person would be willing to let an artist (PhD researcher) use the hangar as a workshop in exchange for any repair and maintenance of the building.

Please let me know if anywhere comes to mind. I've started researching and although I can see a couple of potential places - Longtown and Burscough, for example - I can't see who to contact.

I'd be extremely grateful for any help whatsoever.

Thank you and best wishes,

Puy

As a Brit, I served my compulsory two years of National Service in the Fleet Air Arm branch of the RN, approximately 67 years ago. I recently came across a bundle of old photographs that I took while posted to the Air Radio Workshops of HMS FULMAR, both at the main Lossiemouth field and also at the Milltown flying training satellite.
I have scanned twenty of these postcard-sized contact prints. Would those with an interest in the history of Lossie as a Royal Naval Air Station be interested in seeing the photos? I have a bit of work to do on the scans: cropping, straightening and maybe improving contrast. Should I put them into a folder in my flickr web-site and/or post them on the Lossiemouth forum here?

Regards to all,

Martin (I'll still answer to "Taff" if necessary)
