Good morning all.
A few lines to say hello and to introduce myself. I retired a couple of years ago, after spending all my working life in the offshore gas marine logistics business. This was rather an anomaly, as, having been an aviation enthusiast all my life, I then earned a crust working with ships and sailors. However, doing the day job gives us the cash to do what we really want to do. I hold a private pilots licence (daytime, VFR only), and have been an Air Training Corps instructor for many years.
Flying around over Norfolk and Suffolk, I'm always amazed at how many old airfields there are still visible. Over time I've managed to photograph a few, and, wanting to know more about their history, this has lead me to this site.
Welcome Mr Vulture, from another Norfolk/Suffolk local! I was in the cadets as a CI for a couple of years but gave up as I no longer could spare the time. I hope you enjoy the site and I look forward to see your photos as well.
Yes I have. Orville Dean Hooper, we've talked before. I'm hoping there is a family member of one of his contemporaries that may have personal knowledge of him in those days.
Have you seen my website: www.20thfightergroup.com
? There are lots of galleries there as well as a growing number of mission reports.
You should also join the Facebook group "20th Fighter Group Project" here: www.facebook.com/groups/248605168641868/
. Again lots of photos and some very knowledgable people who can answer most 20th related questions.
Who was your Father? I have a stack of documents from the 20th Fighter Group including mission reports, claims and lots of other stuff. I am happy to find anything I have that is relevant to you.
As you can see from my profile I live in King's Cliffe, I can see the airfield from my house! There are a few people left in the village who remember the war but that number is getting smaller quite quickly. Was there anything specific you were looking for?
Richard,
We did meet many years ago on a flying detail to RAF Wyton!
Things seem to have moved on a bit with the group since then, so all credit to the team.
Once I figure out how to do it. I'll post some pictures for you al.
Just joined what looks like a very useful website here !
A bit about me
Main interest is airworthy Warbirds...not too fussed about jets !. I've taken to traveling to the US most years, for my fill of real 'planes (too restrictive here in the UK...even Duxford...'Oi, don't walk on the grass during the flight-line inspection !!')
Last year I made Flight Engineer on 'Witchcraft'...the Collings Foundation B-24 Liberator...and have just returned from another 3 week stint with the 'Wings of Freedom Tour. Awesome !!!
Currently scratch building a full scale P-51D cockpit. I belong to, and have taken her to, a number of USAAF Museums here in the UK...Leiston, Martlesham Heath, Bottisham and a few others... when the museum groups have open days, to give the visitors a chance to climb in and try out a front-line fighter from WW2.
