My name is Rich. Having viewed the forum for a while now, I thought it was about time I joined. I've been interested in aviation all my life and being lucky enough to have always lived within easy reach of airfields both active and disused.
I spent 22 years in the Royal Air Force in the Ops World and then moved into civil aviation. I discovered AiX by chance and was fascinated by the info on it. Airfield history has always been an interest for me, hopefully from time to time I'll be able to contribute something useful.
Hi, I am researching RAF STRATFORD 1943 - 46 When my aunt in flying control. She was a sergeant in the WAAF'. I would like to find a plan of the airfield with the sites labeled. I have her photos of various buildings including a theatre!
Can anyone help?
I assume this is Atherstone (Stratford) which I believe is how the RAF referred to it. I understand the RAF Museum hold plans of the airfield but no guarantee these will include the building index (some don't). If you email them at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and ask for A2 copies they will send them to you after week or two (they are usually very busy) and then invoice you. Don't forget to add your postal address and I always include a phone number. The price is reasonable but can't recall the current prices. I find A2 is best for reading the small building indexes but on smaller plans A3 will suffice but you don't know this until you get the plan.
Hope this helps

Greetings from Ukraine, sadly a Country in the news for all the wrong reasons. I was born in Bomber Country near Downham Market and spent my early years in Sussex. I can then count Rhodesia,South Africa and now Eastern Europe as my homes.
I am now a journalist and often write for the Aviation press when my full time job allows. I run a web site and forum for my other interest Model Aircraft. If anybody is interested please visit www.frogmodelaircraft.co.uk
you will be very welcome..
I am trying very hard at the moment to write a short history on RAF Selsey aka Norton Field and would be very grateful to anybody here who has any information on the ALG. I have some period photos plus maps etc which most have been borrowed on the net ! What I am looking for is details of the construction unit, any pre War info and details of operations. One story I have heard is that a Lysander was based at the Field in 39/40 this of course was before the ALG. Has anybody else heard of this? I have gathered lot's of history from New Zealand, Belguim and Poland. Any further help would be most welcome. The last time I visited about 7 years ago the original hanger still stood. Does anybody know if that still is the case?
If you can help please let me know either here or at m.foley(at)frogmodelaircraft.co.uk Thank you all in advance and I hope that I can also be active on this wonderful forum
Welcome to the forum. Rhodesia? You're showing your age Selsey was our holiday destination as my parents owned property there between 1962 and 1965. Had no idea there was an ALG there until the 70s. I haven't got anything to help as I am more interested in the local bombing ranges at Pagham, Manhood and Bracklesham. Pagham's direction arrow was not far from the end of Selsey's runway.
Keep safe in Ukraine, I fear it will get worse before it gets better.

Thank you for that.....This Country is in a state of War now. It's a bit like Poland in 1939. On the Aviation front still interesting. I even have the location of a Spitfire crash site.
Writing a small book on Norton Field/RAF Selsey is a great reminder of better times. I remember when I was a child testing Jetex engines on the site as well as flying a Kite.
