I wonder how long before we find out the details behind the incident with the seat?
Aviation accidents are rarely caused by a single factor,in this case the pilot was double unlucky in that (1) the seat fired in circumstances that have never happened before and (2) because it was a rocket seat then he should have survived !!
The cause of the seat firing and the failure of the parachute to deploy are 2 separate and unconnected issues..
I can only post info from the public domain, anything else could be viewed as 'sub judice'
link to caa leaflet identifying probable cause of the chute failure to open (drogue chute scissors shackle bolt)...
The scissors shackle + bolt can clearly be seen on top of the front seat at the end of this reds video (during final approach) - just above the main gun which is aft of the head box...
edit - can be seen very clearly at the start of the vid too...
The cause of the seat initiation is not yet in the public domain AFAIK
I'm just glad the team are actually flying in 2012 regardless of whether it's a 7 or 9 ship after the last terrible season. At least they'll still be flying 9-ships for fly passes. Just not full displays. I remember the team having to fly a 7 ship display for much of the last part of the 1988 season and it was still as impressive as ever.
I dont know about that, there was a crash in the winter of 87/88 when a pilot was killed.
According to ceefax the female pilot has been grounded, but its not for disciplinary reasons. If its not for disciplinary reasons then IMHO it must be for medical reasons.
