......Shell were testing fuel/oil not vehicles at Appleton (think they pulled out in '85) .......

Forgive my lack of precision, I meant vehicles using Shell lubes & fuels ...

I've known of it's existence for many, many years. What brought it to mind recently was tracking down a spare part for my Triumph Spitfire, turns out there is a garage for old Triumph cars adjacent to the airfield. Driving there I found myself driving on what appeared to be part of the old peri track (at the east end of the airfield) which is now adopted as a local road called Crowley Lane.

Since Dunsfold has already been mentioned, how about Gatwick? Although the original airfield didn't encroach on it the wartime expansion certainly did and then the built a sort of airport where you can stand around for a longer period than your flight.

I'm sure I came across some other horse racing track that became airfields but can't recall them. Beverley just popped into my head but probably already been mentioned.

Aintree still has its motor sports track, and of course it was an aircraft factory in both world wars.

And quite a number of non-airfield sites were used for motor racing - Ty Croes is I think. RAF Llanberis was used by our Go Kart club when I was at university. There were a source of networks of roads with good road surfaces.
