Airfix is producing a CTRL TWR scale 1/72... what type is it ?

Isn't that a very old kit reissued? I believe it is just a generic WWII tower and not based on any in particular (though very similar to Trebelzue's unknown design tower)


The best tower model on the market is the Flightpath etched brass kit, in both 1:48 and 1:72 scale. they are based on the well known control tower for all commands 12779/41 and 343/43. They also do add on kits with interior details. However it is over £100 for the big one!

Oups... a bit too expensive for me !

Then better to find a plan and build a tower from scratch...

You are right, with Flightpath, we are talking of quality but too expensive

As told higher, I prefer to build one from scratch with plasticard... but with a good plan then !

olympusman - watch it as plastic card can be quite expensive as well. Like yourself, I've been toying with the idea of building, in 1:72nd scale, a selection of airfield buildings just for a bit of fun.

Ought to be easy enough (LOL!) as there are no compound curves to deal with, just right angles. I think a few requests to the RAF Museum for building plans is in order.

Whilst it must be said the Flightpath releases are expensive, they do look very good indeed. Cheers for bringing them to our attention mawganmad.

Now then, who is going to brave and scratch-build a 1:72 C- or T-type?

First, I need a good plan but my first attempt doens't look good !

I sent an e-mail to RAF Hendon Museum 2 weeks ago but still no remply...

I sent an email to the RAF Museum to order some site plans recently, took them a month to acknowledge the email and say they will send them out. Said they should be with me in 10 days to 2 weeks, that was three weeks ago!!!

Standard time scale I feel, they are good but they do take their time, I guess they have alot of enquiries to deal with but at least they are available.

I had to cancel the order of 'RAF Builds for War' as P&P was as expensive as the book... it was ex-USA !

Tried to order a copy via Amazone and something is going wrong... can't cfm ?
Reason I tried via Abebooks (my usual provider) but too expensive from the USA. They send me an 'ajustment' today and refused.

I still have my old airfox one! I put both floors in on the main section and added window"glass" in the observation area. I also added fine string to the railings for authentic looking railings. Could do a lot with this kit. You could convert the upstairs to look like any standard tower without too much trouble.
