Morning Alan & Welcome.

I also visited the Mohne dam while working in Duisberg during 1980 and they were a lot smaller than I had been expecting ~ I had been expecting to see dams like those in the Elan valley. I remember there had been a big debate going on in the UK that the whole dambusters raid had been a waste of men and resourse however a local engineers Father who had been a school boy at the time told us that it had caused major disruption and that a lot of defensive resourses had to be assigned to the area after the raid. He could not understand the mentallity of those talking the raid down and told us that they should be sent to the Eastern Front if they wanted to talk about wasted men and resouses.

Before I departed from Duisberg he took me along to a reunion of German Tank Core survivors from the eastern front and they related how that this had been their equivalent of the Somme but without any memorials to their departed comrades.

Heathrow in the 1960's had been an aircraft registration recorders dream place and it had been a lot easier to gain access to restricted areas than now seems even possible ~ must have been a dream.

We travelled down from Oxford each weekend and had to wait in the Nine Pin Bowling Alley too be collected on Sunday ( Next to the old Ariel Hotel )

Your comment about apprenticeships had been very true once the government changed around 1964 ~ A relative of mine belonged to a BAA social club at Heathrow ( ? ) and he told us many years later that all of the aircraft manufacturers representatives, who used to drop in for a ' Short and Chat ' if they were in transit, estimated that we would be out of the aircraft industry as a major player within 15 years.

Hi all, have recently discovered your website and are involved with some of the remaining RAF buildings at Lissett. I have been told the site we are involved with was the officers accommodation there are numerous buildings and I am wondering if there were any site plans available to view, that would give us the exact building uses instead of us just guessing and also what buildings have disappeared. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Met the member "Bomber" on site last summer - thank you for the information about this website.
