Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member and my reason for joining this excellent site.
I lived in the village of Wing in Buckinghamshire from 1968 to 1982 and have only just found out that there was an RAF Station there during WWII. I have an interest in all things Military and particularly disused airfields and old defences ( I do always note the strange looks my wife gives me when we are out walking and I find something interesting!!).
I also had the pleasure of living at Grafton Underwood in Northants which obviously had the B17s there during the War.
My knowledge is limited and I am far from an expert but the excitement comes from knowing that something of historical military importance was on my doorstep where I once lived. So wherever I go now I will always research and check out any sites of interest.
My interest in RAF Wing has literally just started having stumbled on the information when reading about the history of the village on line. I am quite ashamed that having lived there for fourteen years as a youngster I had no idea it had been there and realise now that I must have cycled past the site numerous times during those long lost summers of youth.
If anyone has any pictures of RAF Wing that they would be prepared to share I would be most grateful.
Thanks very much. A fantastic site for gathering information from some very knowledgeable people. Just found all threads for the RAF Wing forum. Absolutely fascinating and I am just gutted that I didn't know about this site sooner.
Hello Phil, welcome to AiX. I hope that you stay with us. Lots to learn about Wing and similar airfields. I think it was prior to 1968 that Wing was under consideration as another London airport. A vocal opponent was the late John Dankworth, jazz musician who lived locally with his wife Cleo Laine.
I joined this site partly because my father served at Wing during the war, and everyone on here has been so helpful, however very little seems to be known about this airfield and photos are few and far between. If you have looked at the Wing thread you will have seen a few of my photos of the garden that my father made around his hut and one of some of the airmen he served with.
Retire? I wish!! Came down to the southwest firstly for University and then a short career in the Army and then onto my current job. Although I love Devon I miss the South East and East of England very much and will retire back to East Anglia in just over six years, that is the master plan.
Really looking forward to researching Wing airfield and hopefully in the near future I can get back there to do a bit more research.
Saw the photos of your father and they bring home the human element of almost forgotten places. Really looking forward to researching Wing airfield. Thought I knew quite a bit about the village itself having lived there for most of my youth but finding out about the airfield was a real shock, pleasant one mind.
