That's very interesting. My grandparents talked about the storm of 1946 and how bad it was. Folks in the village I grew up in talk about how the RAF came in to rebuild the walls they had demolished to build a local aerodrome and had to abandon the work due to the weather. To this day you can still see the half-finished wall jutting out halfway across the field.
What a great story about the photo frames from gliders. I'd not heard that one before although I knew of locals around Netheravon using the perspex from the gliders to make small greenhouses and cloches.

I've been here a while now, but never posted in this thread which is poor show on my part.
Ben, Classic aviation enthusiast, living in Sunderland at the moment but originally from Belfast with a 14 year stop over in Edinburgh. Don't have much spare time at the moment with the kids, but when I do get an hour or two I enjoy flight sim using FSX / P3D2 and I currently working on RAE Bedford for the sim using ADE, Sketchup and MCX. Particularly interested in Post War airfields.
thanks for this great site, Its been really fascinating over the years.
Hi everyone, thought I'd say a quick Hello - I live in Old Catton, Norwich, Norfolk and I have recently become interested in the former RAF Horsham St Faith which is now Norwich International Airport. I work for Bristow Helicopters on the Airport and spent nearly 18 years in the RAF as a Aircraft Engine Technician. I was based at Honington ( twice ), Bruggen ( Germany ), Wattisham and finally Coltishall.
I am interested in looking at some of the old buildings on the former site, which is now a big industrial estate. On the Airfield itself there is not really much to see - the 5 original hangars remain but only 2 of them are on the Airfield - the others belong to Anglian Windows and have been fenced off from the Airport.
I have been trying to find a printed site plan of the base which closed in ' 63 or ' 64 but no luck so far !
DoRIS at the RAF Museum have the following site plans available:
Horsham St Faith 415/49, 416/49, 417/49, 12176/62B & 12177/62B
