Is that near Sarf Woodham Ferrers? You've moved 'down there', I've got relatives who've moved from 'down there' up to South Woodham Ferrers, and I'm in between and can't wait to get back 'down there'. Funny old World eh!
I hope you are enjoying Cornwall.
Hello all, let me start at the begining. I was born in Woodstock Ave, Harold Park, Romford , Essex, and my parents house backs onto fields that were once Maylands Airfield, owned by an Edward Hillman. Hillman moved to a new field at Stapleford Abbotts in about 1932 when he ran out of space at maylands. Fast forward to the Battle of Britain and we find a Hurricane Pilot (Pattullo) trying to land his troubled plane on the disused Maylands airfield but it has had anti invasion stakes driven into the flying area to deter use by the Germans and so he opts to try and land on the A12 road. On touch down the plane veers off of the road and crashes into a house two doors from the bottom of Woodstock Ave. Some of the older residents remember the pilot being lifted from the wreckage but he died at Oldchurch Hospital in Romford. There is a memorial plaque to him on the front of the repaired house. Maylands airfield, although disused received the attention of the Luftwaffe and the small civil hanger and other buildings were destroyed and the fields around and about cratered. These fields were where I played as a boy and the airfield bug got me at a young age!
