I used to work at Swansea (formerly Fairwood Common) and heard rumours of a sealed WW2 Ops room beneath the terminal building there. I was even told a probable entrance site. Rumour had it that on conclusion of WW2, all personnel vacated the room the entrance of which was promptly bricked up.
Hi EG (see what I did there!), you need to upload you pics to photobucket. This site will host your pics for free and automatically resize then for posting on forums. Once the pics are loaded you select the one you want to post by highlighting a drop down box and clicking copy. You then go to your post here and right click and select paste, pic should then appear when you post.
Windy should be able to talk you through it.
Hi everybody
My name is Berkeley Pittaway. I am a member of the Norfolk Gliding Club and a glider pilot. The club owns and operates the WW2 airfield at Tibenham as an active airfield. The airfield is 65 years old and is getting difficult to maintain the drainage system. I have been trying to get plans of the drainage layout. I have tried the RAF museum who have some airfield plans but they do not show any drainage layouts. Has anybody got any ideas to help us.

Welcome along to the forum, I know Tibenham well, it is one of my local airfields and I flew out and in there on Sunday with Larry (before he got himself locked in the fuel building!!!)
I Don't know much about the drainage layout at Tibenham I am afraid. Apart from the RAFM, have you contacted the local council, Norfolk county council or even whoever built the airfield in the war?

Ask your local farmers - they're usually up on the drainage sitch.
Also, on the Google Earth photograph of Tibenham, there's an airfield in flight! It's just west of Channonz Hall. The aircraft is near the intersection of the E/W and SW/NE runways and its shadow is on the edge of the E/W runway. Or:
I'm Tim, 36 years old of which over 19 has been serving in Her Majesties finest as an Assistant Air Traffic Controller. I've served all over the UK and my interest in military history is primarily aimed at lost airfields.
When I was a fresh faced 17 year old based at Kinloss, I went for a long bike ride with a friend and after a while we found ourself on a strip of concrete that to my eyes looked like a taxiway. After getting back and asking a few questions, I discovered that we'd found RAF Forres, an airfield within spitting distance of Kinloss that was used during the war. It was now used as a caravan park. It was this that sparked my keen interest in airfield archeology.
Too much is said about the Squadrons, or the Aircraft of the RAF and very little about the airfields that these aircraft flew from. In my mind, the airfields are just as important to the history of the UK and it's sad that so many are disappearing.
In my last posting, I was based a Shawbury as an instructor. My wife bought me a book called "Airfields of Shropshire" and I was staggered by the amount of airfields surrounding Shawbury that were now gone. I plotted all of these on an OS map and went hunting, lots of remnants of airfields remained, but none so preserved as RAF High Ercall which still has everything except the runways and air traffic control tower. Being an Royal Air Force Association Liaison Officer I heard many stories from old RAFA gents and ladies about the goings on on these airfields.
Thank you for having this site and thank you for allowing me to join, I am very excited.
