Town / Village War Memorials - posts pre 2016

Canberra, Not that it answers the question, but I recall seeing what I thought were CWCG "style" headstones for some graves in the cmetary at Yaxley. These graves were not casulalties or for serving personnel. A quick comparison between a headstone in a CWCG cemetary and Sir Ivor Browns shows a difference in the curvature of the top of the marker (infact this difference can be seenin teh first of AFM's pics). I suspect that his family may have had this headstone commisioned privately.

if it wasnt a CWCG the corners would have notches missing like in a cut out. ive seen private graves been commisioned like that. theres i few in the main bit of stonefall cemetary in harrogate. not in the CWCG bit

is this type specific to the Merchant Navy?

Kebecker you may have something there, although I have this headstone from Falmouth. His ship was a Post Office cable ship. Would he be considered MN as it was an HMTS?

Yeah thats the one. they class them as non war graves. had many to inspect

AFAIK the Merchant Navy are entitled to war graves, after all they get all the medals. And the Merchant Navy includes fishing vessels.

Roche War Memorial, Roche, Cornwall. It stands backing on to the playing field by a road junction by the parish church.

Rhu, Argyll and Bute. The memorial is opposite the entrance to driveway leading up to the building that was used as RAF Rhu / Helensburgh officers mess during the war.
