Town / Village War Memorials - posts pre 2016

This why we need to record them on here

In response to Norwich Paul's comment does this thread need to be organised on a county basis (a bit like the memorial audit) so we can build up the record rather than the long straggly thread that meanders all over the country? Just a thought.

in the meantime here are some pics of the memorial at Newquay, Cornwall which I think is in a spectacular location.

I mentioned earlier about the village of Arkholme being a "thankful village", well the adjacenct village of Nether Kellet is also one.

This is the St Stephen in Brannel war memorial. The names cover the whole parish which includes several villages in "Clay Country". I was intrigued that both this memorial and the identical one at Nanpean (also in the parish) only list the names of those who died in the First World War. Both cemetries (St Stephen and Nanpean) have war graves from World War Two and I am aware of some who died in the parish as the result of enemy bombing. I have emailed the parish council to find out if the World War Two dead are commemorated anywhere in the parish.

Just for the record here is Nanpean. Names are identical because it is in the same parish as St Stephen.

Following on from Post #83 here is the response of the clerk to the parish council:

I can confirm that there is a plaque in the Parish Church with names in memory of those who died in the Second World War. It is opposite the main door on the wall.

I shall endeavour to get a photograph in due course.

Photographed this one at Brockworth, Nr Hucclecote, Gloucester yesterday.

Took these at South Cerney yesterday. The second one is just a few yards along the road from the first but has no inscription upon it now.
