I was going to put a picture on of the war memorial in Arkholme near Lancaster, but it hasnt got one. Arkholme is one of the "thankful villages", it sent 59 men off to wwi and all returned.

I took these photographs today at Upper Slaughter village hall. Glouc.

First photograph shows Major Witts. Second one shows the other end of this small hall. Last one shows the small brass plaque that's fixed above the fireplace, not the easiest thing to photograph. This plaque is in dedication to those of the village who were there during a bombing attack in 1944.

The village hall, the church. A plaque in the church, I was told today that there is some debate over this plaque as he wasn't a resident at the time.....so why put the plaque there ?

The term "thankful villages" only seems to apply to WWI, are there any from WWII?

They were also known as 'Blessed' villages. Any village with armed forces returning from both wars were known as 'Double Thankful' If you Google Thankful or Blessed villages there is plenty to explain it all. Very interesting !!
