I sent stevie's post to a friend of mine and this was his reply ;

David
Thanks for this e-mail. Recently I was in Shepton Mallet talking to a family relative who tho 90 yrs old has an amazing memory of his flying in WW2. I spent a great time reading Teddy's logbooks ( nearly 1500 hrs on 40+ types ); part of his flying was flight testing a/c in India shipped over for the FEAF. One of his two crash landings ( in this case a Hurricane ) was caused by an engine fire on take off leading to complete engine failure He landed on a beach and legged it pronto - tho reprimanded at the enquiry afterwards for forgetting to turn off the fuel cocks !! After a technical enquiry - guess what the cause was ? Some fitter(s) on re-assembling the Hurricane had left a silica bag in the engine ( plane packed with these for the long sea journey ). This was 1942. Fast forward 70 yrs and times don't change - it will be interesting to hear the outcome of the Vulcan investigation.

This just in:

Most of you will be probably aware that XH558 was about to undertake a crew currency and practice display flight on Monday, when the take-off run was aborted due to a severe incident involving both port engines.

Inspections have revealed that there is no structural damage to the aircraft outside of the two affected engines, but that sadly, both No.1 and No.2 engines on the port side are beyond repair, having suffered blade damage and the effect of excessive heat.

A full formal investigation of the incident is now underway, headed by the Chairman of the Trust's Safety Review Committee, which will continue in parallel with the repair work on the aircraft. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Branch has confirmed that, as the damage to the engines was contained, the incident is not reportable to them.

A meeting of the Trust Executive, in full consultation with the Board of Trustees has firmly established the desire and ability to press on with immediate planning for returning XH558 to flight. This has unfortunately had an immediate impact on the early season display planning detailed below.

Trust Chief Executive Robert Pleming stated, "The last few days have been understandably very difficult for the whole team, but we are determined to move forward, and have been greatly bolstered by the positive phone calls, emails and messages of support over the internet. Industry colleagues have also been very supportive and we are working closely with them on the best way forward."

The team is now working on the removal of the damaged engines and preparations for the installation of replacement units. We will let everyone know how long this will take when planning has been completed.

Taff Stone has recorded a short video here , while we have a series of photographs showing work already well in hand within the hangar, featured here .

I'm not a real fan of Jet aircraft, but I do like to see the Vulcan fly. Our main purpose for going to Waddington airshow !! But there's always some reason why it can't attend, it's not as if these engine's have been used for the extreme's of war, yet there is forever something wrong with them. Also constant plea's for public donations to keep her existence. Sorry :roll: but maybe she should just retire....while the older Lancaster keeps going :grin: far more pleasing to the eye anyway.

I hope she does fly again . As for the Lancaster she is paid for out of taxpayers money & a flying memorial to all those in Bomber Command who gave their lives . On the other hand XH558 is purely kep going by Public subscriptions & some private sponsers .
I also think both planes are pleasing to the eye.They both come from the same stable & after all one is propeller driven & the other Jet so lets keep both As the best of British !!!!

Regards ,

Bomber .
