Great stuff there Mark - why don't we have anything interesting on the gate over in the UK now??? Its all full size model spitfires now!!
I hear you but they're probably cheaper to keep up. The real stuff is expensive to maintain. That's why the A-10 at the Bury looks like the dog's dinner and the F-5 of course is a model.
Yes the reason for the replica Spitfires and Hurricanes at Stations that were Spitfire and Huricane bases is down to the upkeep of the aircraft. The gate guards are still on RAF charge(just like those in the RAF museum) and they must be maintained otherwise one day all Coningsby(for example) will have is four piles of corroded metal instead of guardians.
Its all changed since our day, canberra. Each station can, supposedley, have only 1 'gate guard'. ForestFan2 will correct me if i'm wrong but the Tornado I believe is the official gate guard, maintenance for which comes out of the station budget. The Lightning comes out of 11 Sqdn's budget, the Phantom out of the OCU's budget and the Harrier out of 3?Sqdn's.
AFAIK the F4 and Tornado at CBY are both (supposedly) maintained from the Stn budget, the 2 Lightnings and Harrier by their respective Sqns. The 1 gate guard rule seems to have been quietly shelved, as Marham and Leuchars amongst others have more than 1. Trouble is, the units have no spare money to spend on these aircraft anymore so they'll almost all be scrapped in the years to come, as they become unsafe. Hence why the F4 still has the awful S****y Six zaps on it.
If anyone has a spare few quid can they buy XM607 and save it before it gets reduced to a nose section?:shock:
