I have carried out extensive research over several years on AAF 526
Bomb dump(FAD) based around Bures on the Suffolk/Essex border.
Lived in Bures approx 40 years, but it was not until about 10 years ago did I start to take an interest in why our village lanes and farm tracks, for some bizzare reason had concrete lay-bys.
Why were there concrete roads going nowhere, constructed across fields ??
Plenty of folk still around here who either lived within the boundaries of the site or actually worked alongside the USAAF staff, ie "railwaymen"
The Bures USAAF Munitions Depot WW2 is one of many similar RAF
and USAAF sites throughout the country.
Can you point out the location of the railhead that was used by the depot? If so, please post your reply in the Non Airfields section under the Weapons/Ammunition Stores thread.
Steady Carnaby, the unitiated, reading your post, might think that you are slagging off the pretty village of Bures. You are referring to the USAAF Munitions Dump WW2 of course:)

LOL - I should have referred to it as 'depot'. (Can you confirm that it is a pretty village however )

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
