I found it looking for info on RAF Methingham. I live just down the road and for my sins got roped into helping with the members quarterly news letter.
Hi Mayfly, Welcome to the forum. Well you know what they say; When something is right on your doorstep.....you never take much notice
My name is Frank and I'm living near Zurich airport in Switzerland. My main interest is in airplanes of WWII and early jet age. I do also search in aviation history, mainly relatet to my country. A passion of my is aviation art, where I do paint in oil and do also pencil drawings.
I was searching at the internet for the airbase at Framlingham and came across this forum. I hope to get some information about the homebase of the 390th BG / 571BS, because I'm writing a book about the B-17 "Lassie", who was landing on 13th of April 1944 about 7 km from my home in Switzerland. Since ten years I'm in contact with the co-pilot of this B-17, Nelson "Bob" Cockrum, now 94 years old. I will place my questions in the section airfields and send of course some photos there.
we have a number of B17 and USAAF enthusiasts on AiX and I hope that someone will be able to assist you with images.
There are several 'free' images on the Fold3 website that are attributed to Framlingham I think that I posted one in this thread showing a temporary bomb store alongside the Shooting-in Butt wiyj a B17 parked on the hardstand. 'J' 230320.
What a great site! My interest in old airfields was spawned when I was working with the RAF at Coltishall between 02-05. I had cause to visit several old airfields in the area (Rackheath, Hardwick & West Raynham) and was amazed at how much is left. I'm mainly interested in those airfields that were used by the 'Mighty Eighth' in East Anglia.
