IIRC the Locking Spitfire was moved to Leuchars in 1986 and put on the roundabout on the main gate. Then in 89 it was removed as Leuchars had neve been a Spitfire base and I bleive that the Spitfire is now in a museum in Glasgow.
A former Red Arrows jet is to be positioned at the front of RAF Scampton to greet visitors arriving at the Lincolnshire base.
The Hawk aircraft – well-known as the type flown by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – will be situated adjacent to the station headquarters.
It will be unveiled by RAF Scampton's Station Commander and representatives drawn from across the base at an event on Monday, October 12.
The retired jet will become RAF Scampton's so-called gate guardian – a traditional RAF tribute celebrating the past, present and future roles of an airfield.
I wouldnt want to see non techies looking after an aircraft, even if its only for a couple of hours on jankers! I suppose one problem is people finding time to look after the gate guardians, and there the problem now of having no service painters to repaint the aircraft. And I suppose what happened to the SAAF Shackleton should be an example as to what can happen.
