Yes I wondered about that one. Although not strictly a gate guard (on the entry r'bout to the airfield), I remember it from 82 - Jag Bolthole.
Could it have gone to Lkn?
Just read on t'internet that the F-100 that is now at Croughton was originally at Sculthorpe, and was then moved to Upper Heyford. It is an ex-French Air Force machine.
Lakenheath's is apparently also an ex-Armee de l'Air plane, and came to Suffolk directly from France. It is painted to represent a USAF F-100 that crashed at Wheelus in Libya in 1969 (pilot ejected safely).
Didn't know about Mysteres in 82. When I was at Sculthorpe (78-79) there were lots of F100s, Mysteres and T33s that had already been delivered, more were delivered in 1980.
I suppose not a gate guard in the conventional sense that it is on a an airfield or related site, this Hunter GA11 is at the Riverside MOT Centre in Melksham. photographed 2/9/2013
Thanks Rich .
I took these last September shortly after the Dominie had been placed there and hence the holding down ropes...while the glue sets !
The Dominie is very close to the other Cranwell gate guard , Jet Provost T5A XW353 , which can be seen in the rear of the second photograph . Car parking is easy as is access to both aircraft .
Visiting former RAF Locking earlier this year I was amazed (considering the otherwise almost complete erradication of the buildings) to still see the remains of the gate guard information board and the metal poles that held the chain around the gate guard area were still there
A few more that I took yesterday at Wycombe (Naphill) sadly they are both in need of attention.
There is a lot of grime, of the green sort, in various places that needs to be cleaned off.
