Tornado F3 ZH552 replaced Javelin XA634 outside 90 Signals Unit HQ last year and was close to what was the original main gate prior to the 1986-88 airfield expansion when Leeming became home to the F3 . The problem for aviation enthusiasts and photographers was that the location was not accessible and so the Javelin and F3 were not really gate guards as such . During the re-building and expansion of the base a new guardroom and main gate were built further to the south with a new access road to bypass Gatenby village and last month the F3 was moved to the 'new' main gate and now stands outside of the perimeter fence .

The tail insignia are left to right ; 25 , 23 and 11 Squadrons .

What happened to the Javelin?

What happened to the Javelin?

It went to the Jet Age Museum at Staverton on or around the 25 March 2015 . I took these photos on the 19 March as it was being prepared for the move .

That's good news. There is something about the Javelin that to my eye makes it more impressive that any other RAF jet of that era.

I was intrigued by this photo of base aérienne 721 rochefort which is a French Air Force Technical School
The silhouette on the parade square is particularly striking

The Airfield is one of those (fairly common?) shared military and civil airfields, military to the north and civil to the south

I was also struck by a couple of other things
How much the shadow of the Gate Guard looked like Concorde in this view from Zoom Earth ( the replacement for Flashearth )
zoom.earth/#45.894399,-0.980659,15z,sat

and the number of Gate Guards. at least 5, including a Noratlas in Google Maps

Lastly if you have a quick snoop around using Zoom Earth and Google Maps, the number of other aircraft , some literally lying around is quite amazing. I spotted Mirage III, Mirage F1, Magisters. Some are clearly instructional airframes for the technical school, but others are just being scrapped

Gate Guards at the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop
ZSU-23/4

Beaver HC1 XP822

Scout AH1 XP910

I think these have all been in place for quite a while, note they even tarmaced around the ZSU-23/4...

The main gate seemed to have comprehensive set
Beaver
Souix
Scout
Gazelle
Lynx
25 pounder

I think that was the lot as I drove by.
Obviously none of these silly restrictions to "one per unit" here
