Excellent results - and all from free software, well done. Really like the Chapel/gym.
Might be worth you starting a thread or posing your pics on the Airfield Structure Audit (as built) thread illustrating the different building types.
What are the yellow boxes on the watch tower roof - I'm thinking equipment stowage boxes?
Paul: You have been reading my mind! Those models are fantastic and really help you to visualise what these things looked like, both inside and out. Will have to see if I can work out how to use that software myself. Well done for showing us the fruits of your labours.
Those really are great Paul and it's very interesting to see the internal arrangement. I wish I could add that much detail to my Flight Simulator models.
Very good paul, it a shame about the newton rings on the Nissen huts, I wonder if you had used paint.net, the vertical line would'nt be so jagged and you wouldn't have the ring effect. Excellent though, the shaddows make them look really good.
Message to Richard, I know the crew rooms at upwood dont have the annexe but the two main huts are there and these would help paul (you just can't get the staff).
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
The pictures above are just screen grabs, reduced in size to suit this forum.
The distortions on the nissen hut roofs are a side effect of the old method of applying the corrugated effect by means of a render. The crew room model is having proper extruded corrugations added, although I'm struggling at the limit of procesor capacity while it actually draws each section. I guess that's something I ought to expect as they are being built full-scale.
The yellow boxes on the control tower roof are the spare runway heading boards for the frame.
Sketchup also lets you do fun things like this:

My current project is building Deenethorpe in it's entirety, including the dispersed sites, for the 401BG Association. Although I'm building it so as to be viewable in Google Earth, after looking at the Flight Simulator pictures on other threads, I think that might be a better way to go about it and be more user-friendly for the Veterans.
The Virtual Deenethorpe model is only about 40% complete at basic building level and is almost 150Meg as is.... when I start adding windows, doors, stovepipes etc. it might just end up too large to be of any use.
That ring effect is probably the limit of either the drawing engine supplied with Google sketchup or a limitation of the graphics card. I get the same effect in Gmax, the program I use, especially if I use a texture that has close vertical lines and then zoom out away from the model.
PB; If you need any advice re flight sim just ask. I've been building flight sim models for a good number of years now and its a great tool to use for recreating airfields.
The one in the first pic, I built one for those for a flight sim version of Binbrook. I don't know what it is or what it was used for originally, I've been trying to find out. I think in later years it was used as RAF Binbrooks rugby club.
Here's one of NorwichPaul's picture of that very building at Binbrook it was behind the institute.
Here's the version I made for Flight sim.
