I joined the group because I am from Carlisle and have an interest in the Silloth MU site. My aunt was in the WAAF and stationed there. When I was young I heard all kinds of stories about that place and about the different nationalities stationed there. Also, a bit about the accidents on take-off into the fog. Her group spent a lot of their time packing parachutes. Churchill's daughter was in her group and was a hell-raiser.
She married her boyfriend and they both signed up. He spent his life in the RAF and was quite famous as he was an amateur photographer and took pictures of the sinking of a German battleship. He died about five years ago, shortly after attending a 50th anniversary get-together with German survivirs, which got a lot of press in the UK. She is still alive, age 95.
My name is Paul Phillips (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)
I remeber having introduced myself earlier.
But here I am again. I am a Dutch designer. Together with my brother Frans, a professionel photographer, we travelled to the UK several times to photograph disused control towers (the more derelict the better). Via our small publishing company dealing with classical transport (www.narwal.eu
) we are preparing a book on the subject. At the moment we have already collected many towers and are programming our next vistit to collect another 20. Great Fun! In the book we show, apart from the photo's, where they are, how to get there and kindly publish the facts on the website of Robert Truman about the specific airfield. I'm Belgian and retired.., so the English Language it is a very long time ago!
However, my intrest for WWII started allready when I was a youngster: on a field in our village DRIESLINTER (5 miles NE from the town of TIENEN/TIRLEMONT),the Mosquito MM678 (157 sqn Swannington) crashed in October 6th 1944, probably due to "friendly fire"
Crew:
P/O (Aus401553) William Searle VALE (pilot) RAAF - KIA
F/Lt (112.736) Alfred Edward David ASHCROFT DFC (nav.) RAFVR - KIA
The air war in Belgium has been enormous: situated in the "Bomb alley" between GB and Germany, about 5000 air accidents took place!!
I hope that some members can help me out about a few crashes, forced landings etc
Many thanks to all
