Posting may be sporadic, due to bandwidth restrictions imposed by both my employer and my OH, although I will do my best not to put the skids under anything.

I'm Julian, aka Bluesteel.

I come from an ex RAF family and my father was a Private Pilot and Gliding Instructor too, so I spent much of my childhood in and around RAF and Civilian airfields all over the UK. I then learned to glide and later took a PPL, again expanding the number of airfields flown from and visited. So this is a big nostalgia trip for me :-D

I'm going to have a browse now and, if I can find any relevant photos, will post and/or comment in the appropriate aerodrome thread.

Julian

Hello Everyone.

I first became interested in WWII airfields when I visited Liitle Easton Lodge (near Dunmow, Essex) with the wife a few years back. In the dovecote was a small collection of photographs and memorabilia relating to the airfield there, and I couldn't believe how little now remains of the airfield. When I got home, I started trawling the web for information about the wartime airfields and have been obsessed ever since !

I visited the museum at Thorpe Abbots, Norfolk this year. The museum and the people there were fantastic, and it was a great feeling to actually go into some original airfield buildings. I remember standing on the top of the control tower and imagining what it would be like to see the B-17's queueing on the perimeter track and then thundering along the runway and into the air.

I stumbled upon AIX after visiting REF's splendid web site, and I'm glad to see that there are many others with similar interests.

I live in South East Essex and would love to visit some airfields, but I don't know how to get permission from the landowners. I expect many of you do this quite often, so I'd love to "tag along" if anyone is planning to visit any of the Essex or East Anglian airfields.

Cheers,

Steve
