Met a couple of Staff Sergeants from Lakenheath. They were going out with my sister at the time, though not at the same time
I even got a pass to go on base from one of them.
The first one was a great guy but my sister didn't want to get married at the time, dammit!
The second was okay but he finished his tour and went back home leaving my sister pregnant. Not an uncommon story but in our case she didn't mind, neither did mum or dad as long as they got grandchildren!
That was almost 20years ago! Miss the F-111s though.

Welcome on board... occasionally used to get a taxi to the mess at Alconbury after the Wyton bar shut down for the night... Great Burgers - happy days. (I seem to remember)

My main involvement in all this was as the founder and (if I am allowed to be so modest) the designer of the RAF Banff Strike Wing Memorial.
I still have a lot of the original info regarding the airfield and the project to build the memorial there all those years ago. If any members want any specific info about the memorial project, etc, please just ask.
I have recently finished my first book "Luftwaffe over Scotland" subtitled "A history of German air attacks on Scotland, 1939-1945" which is due for publication in spring 2010 by Whittles.
I am now getting stuck into research for my next book, tentatively titled "Scottish Wartime Airfields and Operations, 1939-1945" and this forum will I hope, be a lot of help in getting to grips with this subject.
I look forward to contributing, and if there is any "on site" info you need from my North-East corner of Scotland, I'd be happy to oblige.
Welcome to the forum - I'm sure you'll find much of interest on here and a ready pool of experts to help you with your researches.
I've seen photos of the Banff memorial and very impressive it is too - well done. There's a memorial section on the forum where you might like to post a picture or two.
As your part of the world is relatively remote there's not as much material on here as with certain other areas such as East Anglia for example, but for me this makes it all the more interesting, so please post away!
I agree with Peter, there is so much known about the famous airfields that it has become, well, a bit boring. Scotland has it share of famous airfields but there are many that are often forgotton.
The Luftwaffe over Scotlands sounds interesting as this too is often overlooked (along with Belfast).
Enjoy yourself
